Salvatore Pascale@Reading has developed a mod to turn the shear stresses in the atmosphere into diabatic heating as they should. This helped the winter cold bias, IIRC, and reduced the artificial correction to the atmospheric energy budget by an order of magnitude. Since the introduction of the UTOPIA code, the detailed heat budget of the ocean in FAMOUS does not appear to balance correctly anymore - despite the fact that UTOPIAn advection isn’t applied to either temperature or salinity! This appears to be a purely diagnostic issue resulting from UTOPIA changing the naming convention for the vertical velocity fields, although we have not confirmed this in practice.
