FAMOUS

Minutes of the QUEST-ESM NCAS FAMOUS meeting of Thursday, 22nd March 2007

Present: Robin, Annette, Ros, Lois, Simon, Jeff, Jonathan

Ros has amended UMUI panels to support the standard FAMOUS without hand-edits (except for the hand-edit that adds the namelist of tunable parameters). This will be a new version 4.5.3 of the UMUI, and will meet the March QUEST-ESM deliverable D2.

NCAS-CMS will set up a Linux machine for the UMUI outside the Reading firewall for use by the community. The aim is to have this in place by June/July, which suits our milestone of June for a distributed UMUI. Users will log onto it to run the UMUI, and will use it to store files of common interest. Consideration is needed about how jobs will be submitted and how files (apart from basis files) will be shared. Ros and Lois are thinking about possible improvements to the UMUI, such as better help. There will be some security controls on access to jobs. The new machine will host the UMUI and FCM databases.

Annette has MOSES 2.2 running successfully in Had AM 3?, and is working with Jeff on a problem of bit-reproducibility across different PE configurations. Coastal tiling still needs to be added. This will not be completed for our milestone of having the C cycle technically working this month, and therefore should have a higher priority than QESM work for the moment.

Robin has Had OCC running successfully in FAMOUS. There is a drift in tracer fields which should be conserved, for the same reason as salinity. We do not know whether/how this was dealt with in Had CM 3 LC?. It can be considered while waiting for MOSES 2.2 in FAMOUS, and there is still work to be done on the AOGCM climate too.

Annette has carried out a 100-year run of FAMOUS xbyvs in Bristol on ormen, after Simon reinstalled the PUM; ormen is the same kind of machine as the QUEST cluster will be. Jonathan finds this run to be statistically compatible with a parallel run on HPCx. The QUEST cluster is still not available. When it is, a better statistical test using an ensemble would be useful.

NCAS-CMS has a helpdesk system working. Ros will add a QUEST category to it.

Jonathan would like to consult Lois and Jeff about the various ancillary utilities from Paul Valdes and Dan Lunt, to find out better how to go about setting up a version of FAMOUS with arbitrary geography etc. This might clarify further requirements for xancil.

We had a discussion about possible ways of converting PP to netCDF, and whether netCDF output from the UM should be supported.
