Minutes of the QUEST-ESM NCAS FAMOUS meeting of Friday, 27th April 2007

We reviewed the FAMOUS project. D1 was completed on time and provides a documented and evaluated FAMOUS. The project will finish with D3 in March 2008, which will be a documented and evaluated FAMOUS-CI (including carbon cycle and ice sheets), with UMUI modifications. We have a milestone to achieve this by Dec 2007, because after that Robin should be working on Quaternary QUEST.

D2 was due in March but we are delivering it in various pieces:

• User-friendly (PRECIS-like) interface for FAMOUS: We are not doing this because the users (QUEST Deglaciation and Quaternary QUEST) prefer the flexibility of the UMUI. Instead, the UMUI has been modified to support FAMOUS, and will be made available through an NCAS server. The server be outside the firewall and users will have accounts on it. Some version will be working by our milestone of June 2007. It will be made clear during what hours the service is actively supported (not 24/7), although it will probably run OK the rest of the time, like our other machines. But if this is problematic, a backup server sited elsewhere could be considered for the UMUI database.
• Facilities for diagnostics and visualisation: We have the agreement of the Met Office to offer the UKMO IDL library.
• Ancillary file generation: As discussed in Minutes23apr07. Various extra points were discussed today but have been recorded in Minutes23apr07 for convenient reference. If Jeff is able to do the work in the next two months, as suggested, it will meet our milestone of June 2007. Jeff showed the results of his program for plotting the island boxes, in HadGOM1, HadOM3 and HadOM2/FAMOUS.
• Helpdesk: This exists on NCAS-CMS and will be moved to the server.

Robin has made some good progress with FAMOUS climatology. By deepening the N Atlantic bathymetry and adjusting sea-ice parameters, he has reduced the NH sea-ice extent and cold bias. He is now doing a systematic investigation of the effect of the varying the maximum ice concentration, the new ice thickess and the melting ice albedo. The ensemble generator might be helpful with this.

Conservation of alkalinity and dissolved inorganic carbon in the HadOCC ocean will be arranged in the same way as for salinity.

Annette has solved the problem of bit-reproducibility across different PE configurations in MOSES 2.2, with Jeff’s help. This is a good step forward. Robin found the climatology is unaffected by fixing this bug.

Finally, we discussed the concepts and implementation of coastal tiling. The plan remains to implement the 5.5 coastal tiling mod in MOSES 2.2 at 4.5. The code has been somewhat rearranged so it can’t be used as it it. Annette and Lois will continue to work on it.
